Do I Believe God Exists?

"We value tools that are easily grasped and can be readily used to give us leverage in solving a wide variety of problems." "You need lower level explanations, explanations on levels that humans can really fully, rationally understand." "God is not useful as an explanation of anything." I fully agree with these statements. I do not believe in God. The noun lacks a referent, it is a word that has no definition, it lacks any use-meaning distinction. To use the word god is to mention it, is always self-referencing and therefore lacks any utility. The gods of other cultures have names and definite characteristics, events and experiences could be interpreted as in or out of their domains. The Judeo-Muslim-Christian "god" has no definite characteristics, is essentially a null set. It is a word which, literally, means nothing. The common use of the word is to refer to an amorphous concept of unquestionable authority, the ultimate totalitarian. Even the seemingly innocuous uses, "God bless you" contain the underlying assumption that "God" has the authority (and power) to bless you regardless of your personal beliefs. "God" is not merely useless, the word is dangerous.

Very dangerous.

Should all dangerous concepts be discarded?

i do not agree with all the statements written. only because God is a spiritual God. meaning he is the holy spirit. if someone does not believe in God or Jesus Christ our lord and savior then they can live that way and God won't judge you. he won't smite you if you do something wrong because he loves all the people of the world even if you kill a person, he will be ashamed that you would treat a human like that but not harm you. now i understand that some people think that God judges you. well he doesn't. he can be disappointed and that's not judging you. anyone who realizes how many religions have God in them they will come to realize that maybe God is real. the word God is NOT dangerous! also what do you think the bible is? if you read it, the bible tells you all about God and how he made a son named Jesus to die for our sins so that we could live. so anyone who thinks God is not real can kiss their sorry ass goodbye when they die.

Jan Wolter on July  9, 2007:

I am reasonably familiar with the Bible and the story and teachings of Jesus. I think there's a lot of good stuff in there, and I've known many people who have found in it an inspiration to live exemplary lives. However, I am not a Christian. I do not personally believe either that the Bible was divinely inspired or that this fellow Jesus, who walked the earth two thousand years ago, had any special relationship to God.

No matter what you believe, you have to face the fact that the majority of people in the world think you are wrong, and a great many of those think you are going to suffer some kind of punishment for your mistaken beliefs someday. It's too bad, but what are you going to do about it? Put it up to a vote? I think that makes you a Roman Catholic, since that is the biggest religious group in the world (about 1.05 billion people), followed by Sunni Muslims (about 940 million). Of course, if you bundle together all the atheists, agnostics, humanists and deists with the people who don't really give a darn, then that's about 1.1 billion people (though some estimates go much higher) but they probably don't care what you believe either, so we can ignore them.

Really, everyone has to believe what makes sense to them. The fact that there are people making threats to try to get you to believe what they believe is best ignored.

By the way, I'm confused why non-believers need to "kiss their sorry ass goodbye" if "God won't judge you."
