Time has passed. We now have a few states that recognize gay marriage, or some gay marriage-equivalent under another name, but the federal government still does not. Because of that, it makes a great deal of difference whether a particular right or responsibility of married couples is granted by state or federal law. I didn't make that distinction in this article, and in retrospect probably should have.
